Food Sensitivities play a role in many common health conditions. Chronic health complaints such as digestive problems, headaches, joint and muscle pain, and fatigue are all symptoms which can be caused by our immune system’s reaction to foods, additives, or other substances in our diets. Figuring out our sensitivities can be difficult. The reactions may be delayed or dose dependent, meaning we may not feel the effects of a reaction until many hours or days after we’ve eaten the reactive foods, or unless we eat enough of the reactive food.

Q: What is MRT?
A: Mediator Release Testing is a patented blood test that quantifies how strongly your immune cells react to the foods and food chemicals tested by measuring intracellular mediator release indirectly. When released from immune cells, chemical mediators such as histamine, cytokines, and prostaglandins produce damaging effects on the body’s tissues, leading to the development of symptoms.

Q: Is MRT accurate? How does it compare to other food sensitivity testing?
A: A blinded peer-reviewed scientific study showed MRT to have the highest level of accuracy of any food sensitivity blood test (94.5% sensitivity, and 91.8% specificity).
Q: What is the difference between food allergies, food intolerances and food sensitivities?
A: A food allergy is an immune system response (IgE mediated). Food allergies are very serious and symptoms usually occur within an hour of digestion. Only 1-2% of the population is affected. A food sensitivity is a delayed food allergy and also an immune system response (white blood cells, IgG, IgM, C3 and C4 mediated). Symptoms occur 45 minutes up to three days after ingestion. A food intolerance can produce digestive symptoms similar to food sensitivities but it doesn’t involve the immune system.
Q: Why do I have food sensitivities? How did I get them?
A: Researchers are still learning how they’re developed. The most widely accepted factors: poor digestion, unbalanced gut flora, chronic stress/severe trauma, immune system overload, genetics, and toxic-induced loss of oral tolerance (overexposure to chemicals).
