Nutrigenomics studies how food and diet interact with our genes. We all have our own genotype, meaning our genes come together in a specific way that makes us who we are. While 99.9% of genes from one human to the next are the same, the remaining 0.1% result in a number of variations among humans.
Our genotype is the genetic coding we possess, phenotypes are what traits are expressed. They are observable traits like hair and eye color. Many factors can affect how our genes are expressed, including lifestyle and environmental factors like nutrition.
Nutrigenomics Testing
Clem&Thyme offers 3×4 Genetics testing, which analyzes genetic markers to see how they influence factors like inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular health, and more.
What can a genetic test like 3X4 testing tell you?
The tests will tell you whether a result has high or low penetrance — or the likelihood that you will exhibit a particular trait. The genetic test can tell you which pathways or areas of your health to be more mindful of, which areas need a little bit more attention.
Gene Summary
You will be provided with a gene summary in your genetic report that outlines your variants for a number of genes. The genes will be grouped by their impact on your health.
Genetics and environment both play a role in our health. Knowing the impact of our own gene variants allows us to make the lifestyle changes that will benefit us most.
Pathway Analysis
3×4 testing will examine how your genes interact in your body and determine the systemic implications.
Low penetrance genes may not do much on their own, but in combination with other low penetrance genes, they may have a greater impact. For example, your particular combination of variants could have a very high impact on pathways related to hormone balance or inflammation.
This genetic test will clearly show you these pathway-based results. The pathways outlined in your report will relate to cellular functions, systemic functions, cardiovascular health, energy, activity, and nutrients.
Nutrigenomics Diet
Based on your results, the 3×4 model will result in three diet recommendations, three lifestyle or behavior interventions, and three supplement suggestions in three key health areas specific to your results. Your recommendations are based on which high-impact variants were identified by the test.
Recommendations could address methylation, inflammation, hormone balance, or a number of other health factors.
Using the information from this test, your dietitian can personalize your care to help you optimize your nutrition and meet your health goals.
